Musings from Mrs. D: of Eggs and Armor

I woke up to another glorious day. First on the agenda, humbly present myself to the King for His use today!

Next on my list… gather suitable food for lunch (and dinner… it will be another late night). I carefully placed six eggs (always selected by the earliest date on the carton) into a pot and turned on the gas plate. We almost always take hard boiled eggs for lunch—they’re quick, easy, and give us energy.

The minute I turned away, I heard a loud pop!

There goes one egg I thought!

Yes! The shell on one egg split right open under the duress of the heat and all the albumen spilled out into the water. (Gas is instantly HOT!)

Immediately my mind went to some of the verses I  have been studying in preparation for Retreat.

We come under fierce attack just prior to and during these retreats. Can we withstand the “fiery trials,” or will we just crack when the spiritual heat is turned up? As the thoughts raced through my mind, I made a mental note to increase my prayers for strength and diligence in remembering to thoroughly dress myself in my spiritual armor each day.

The timer chimed and I removed the eggs and went through my routine of cracking and peeling them. I always bang the egg on my sink until it cracks the shell in several places, then I carefully wiggle my finger under the shell and the membrane. If I do it just right, the shell peels off in large sections leaving a perfect “shell-less” egg!

I stopped in my tracks !

“Oh Lord” I prayed “You just gave me a visual picture of what happens when I allow unconfessed sin in my life. It creates a chink in my armor, and before I know it, the enemy wiggles his way in to my thinking, my attitude, and my behavior! He simply peels off the very protective “shell” You have given me to withstand his attacks.”

Right there while I was preparing our lunch I carefully put on my war clothes from top to bottom:

The Helmet of Salvation
The Breastplate of Righteousness
The Belt of Truth
The Shield of Faith
The Shoes of Gospel Peace
And I picked up The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God!

Do you get dressed for battle each day?

If not, you are just like the egg I was holding in my hand…” shell-less” and unprotected against the wiles of the devil! I encourage you to re-visit Ephesians 6 and take seriously the spiritual battle going on around us.

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth.
