Living Science Academy Academic Courses

We offer a full complement of academic courses for homeschooled students from 2nd to 12th grade as well as science clubs for K-1. Our qualified, innovative faculty provides rigorous instruction in what we believe is an excellent balance of a warm, homelike atmosphere, high expectations, and accountability. Most classes meet once a week. Because we are a science-focused school, all students are required to take a science class with us. Our annual week-long field studies trips are a highlight for students in middle and high school, and work completed on these trips is a significant portion of each student’s grade.

Science Clubs: K-1

Our science clubs meet twice a week on Mondays and Fridays to foster and satisfy students’ curiosity about God’s world. During each 5.5-hour class (a full school day), students enjoy a variety of hands-on, interactive learning adventures with a STEM focus.

Elementary School

Elementary: 2-5

These classes meet on Wednesdays all day and provide language arts, technology and engineering, science, and math instruction. Teachers assign a week’s worth of work in each subject to be completed at home under parental supervision. In addition, we offer further math instruction and Adventure Fridays for this age group.

We have a mini-expedition on campus each year to allow our younger students a taste of what they can look forward to on middle school Expedition.

Elementary School

Middle School 6-8

Our middle school science classes meet for 2-2.5 hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students begin in 6th grade with general science and continue with 7th-grade life science and 8th-grade environmental and earth studies. We offer the full middle school curriculum, including middle school Spanish, technology and engineering, math, history, and language arts. The middle school Expedition, a week-long field studies trip to St. Simon’s and Jekyll islands for exciting “science on the beach,” engineering rotations, dissections, art, and worship, is the highlight of the school year for middle school.

High School 9-12

Living Science Academy provides all coursework required by the State of Georgia plus many standard and unique electives. Our science classes begin with physical science in 9th grade and continue with biology (10th), chemistry (11th), and a choice of physics or anatomy and physiology for 12th grade students. Our expert faculty teaches core courses and electives with enthusiasm and high expectations, and we offer STEM electives including high school engineering, computer programming, and electronics. Students in the Servant Leader program receive academic credit for leadership training, marine ecology, and drama. We also offer dual enrollment on campus through Truett-McConnell University including two freshman composition courses and Introduction to Psychology.

Hybrid Homeschooling

Living Science Academy is a hybrid-model school; parents retain their leadership role in the education of their children. Most of our classes meet one day per week, which means that students will complete a majority of their school work at home under parental supervision. Families with one or both parents involved with their students’ academic coursework are most successful with the hybrid model. The State of Georgia requires a minimum of 4.5 hours per school day for home educated students. Most full-time elementary or middle school students at Living Science Academy will be able to complete their weekly work within this timeframe (22.5 hours/week including time spent in class). High school coursework requires more time, depending on the course load selected.

Accreditation

Standardized Testing

We offer reasonably priced professionally proctored ITBS testing for grades 2-12 each spring. The State of Georgia requires home educated students to take a grade-appropriate standardized test every three years, beginning in the third grade. Many of our families choose to use this service annually to give their students experience in a typical testing environment. We conduct testing in two sessions, two weeks apart with a makeup date to accommodate students’ schedules.

Our classes are small; our teachers have high expectations, and we love to help students succeed.
